Trial for Ex-elected Official Accused of Killing Las Vegas Journalist Postponed

Robert Telles pleaded not guilty to the murder charge

A trial date has been postponed for former Las Vegas-area elected official Robert Telles. Telles stands accused of killing an investigative reporter he believed to be critical of him in his articles.

A new date wasn't immediately set following the update from a Nevada judge. Telles, 47, remains in prison without bail and has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. Should he be convicted, he faces life in prison.

Prosecutors in court Tuesday argued that more time is needed to review key evidence from cellphone and computer records before trying Telles in the September 2022 stabbing death of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German.

German, 69, dedicated more than 40 years as an investigative reporter in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas police charged Telles in September for the crime after DNA evidence found underneath the victim's fingernails was discovered.

Police efforts were stalled for months by arguments that had reached the state Supreme Court, questioning whether access to German's cellphone and computer files would violate a confidential information clause protected from disclosure under state and federal law, said The Associated Press.

Review-Journal representatives are now tasked with inspecting the records.

He had been found stabbed to death outside his home months after the critical articles he had published in 2022. Telles was consistently the subject of German's pieces, detailing the ex-official's misdeeds and turmoil in office.
