The family of a Georgia man who mysteriously died while he vacationed in Central America said they still haven't been able to retrieve his remains despite his death nearly three weeks ago.
Adrian Bennett, 50, of Marietta, Georgia, reportedly fell to his death during a late February getaway to Panama, loved ones said, according to WAGA-TV.
Bennett was slated to fly home to Georgia on Feb. 23. Instead, loved ones received a call that the former FedEx worker wouldn't be making the trip back.
"According to what they [officials] say, he fell from a balcony, which was about 12-feet high, and supposedly hit his head and succumbed to that," Carlos Scott, Bennett's best friend, told the station.
It's unclear who initially retrieved his body or called 911 to report his death before he was transferred to the morgue.
"It's been a long process, and it's like we're at a standstill, and we're not getting any answers," Paula Redman, one of several of the victim's relatives, who expressed frustration over retrieving his body.
Redman said Panama officials requested proof of family members' relationships to Adrian before they'd agree to surrender his remains, but they wouldn't accept copies of documents, creating a roadblock in their efforts.
"We're running into walls everywhere we turn," Bennett's cousin Deedra Watts said. "We were told if he's not back in 30 days, that Panama can do pretty much what they want to with his remains."
Meantime, Scott is hoping his efforts to get Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff involved will be just the push they need to help bring Bennett's body back to the U.S.
"It's just [that] a lot of people want to see him get home, so we can have a proper homegoing service for him," he said.
