Kansas City Teen Shot in Woods Next to Friend Was 'Perfect Kid', Family Says, As Cops Search For Killer

"That's my first baby brother; my life is never going to be the same again," said Carlos Gonzalez's sister

As loved ones remembered a Kansas City teen shot to death in the woods as the "perfect kid," the hunt for his killer continues.

Carlos Gonzalez, 17, was fatally shot in the woods, alongside his friend, 19-year-old Kalob Ruth last Thursday, according to police, WDAF-TV, KCTV-TV ,and The Kansas City Star reported.

The victims were transported to a hospital where they were both pronounced dead.

That same day, police arrested a person of interest, who was later released, according to KCTV. Since then, no further arrests have been made.

While cops continue to search for the shooter and a motive behind the double slaying, Carlos' sister, Maria Rodriguez, said she's still in shock.

"That's my first baby brother; my life is never going to be the same again," she told the station.

Carlos played on his high school football team. Rodriguez, 25, said his coach described him as the "perfect kid," despite being dealt a tragic blow at such a young age, according to the Star.

In 2021, their mother died in a car crash, prompting Rodriguez to adopt her younger siblings. Carlos stepped up to help care for his little brothers - getting them ready for school every morning and looking after them.

Now, his sister is hoping justice will be served for the selfless teen, and that the person responsible for his death will be held accountable.

Said Rodriguez, "I understand that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and I don't want to say anything to mess up the investigation, but I do want to know what happened, and we want justice for my little brother."
