On Thursday, authorities said that suspected tornadoes damaged houses and businesses and left people without electricity in parts of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.
Scott Hickman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio, said forecasters are aware of damage in Lakeview, Ohio, and throughout the region and plan to survey the area on Friday to confirm the tornado.
Damaging Tornadoes Struck Indiana-Kentucky Border
A spokesperson for Logan County's Emergency Management Agency confirmed the tornado, saying that there were no verified reports of fatalities or injuries.
The spokesperson said they had a tornado strike in Logan County, and people are currently looking into damages.
Authorities said severe storms, including at least one suspected tornado, struck southern Indiana and northern Kentucky on Thursday. Homes and trailers in the Indiana villages of Hanover and Lamb along the Ohio River were damaged by storms.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff Ben Flint, storms have destroyed three or four single-family homes, four or five additional buildings, and several abandoned campers beside the river. Flint told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that they were fortunate that no one was injured.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said a suspected tornado slammed Jefferson County, causing damage to multiple residences and downing trees and electricity lines.
He shared photos on X, formerly Twitter, of one home with its roof blown off, another with missing roof shingles, and an image of a baseball-sized hailstone.
The agency reported that around 2,000 Duke Energy customers in Hanover lost power at some time during the storms.
Trimble County Emergency Management Director Andrew Stark said that the storms in Kentucky destroyed at least 50 structures, including residences. He stated to the Louisville Courier-Journal that they had a ton of damage.
Kentucky Governor Warns Kentuckians
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear released a statement and said that a tornado made landfall in Gallatin and Trimble counties, close to the Indiana state line, and that some minor casualties had been reported. He warned Kentuckians to watch the weather as more storms were predicted to hit the state on Thursday night and into Friday morning.
Beshear added that there appears to be significant damage, especially to Milton in Trimble County. They think that over 100 facilities are damaged.
Furthermore, he said that the state's emergency operation center was activated to coordinate storm response.
There were unverified reports of tornadoes in Jefferson County, Missouri, and Monroe County, Illinois.
According to the National Weather Service, severe weather from northeast Texas to Indiana and Ohio was expected to continue into Thursday night. It issued a tornado watch for parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, and Missouri until 9 pm.
