California Police Chase Ends With Woman Driving BMW With 2 Dogs Into Ocean, Trying To Swim Away

Lifeguards were able to rescue the Boston terriers

A Los Angeles police chase ended in the Pacific Ocean on Saturday when a woman with two dogs in a BMW drove into the surf and started swimming in a desperate attempt to escape capture, according to authorities and reports.

The wild scene unfolded around 11:20 p.m. near the Venice pier, the California Highway Patrol said.

Officers tried to pull over the driver of a silver BMW X3 for speeding on the 10 Freeway, the Los Angeles Times reported. But the driver didn't stop kept going straight into the waves.

She allegedly left the dogs in the car and started swimming away from shore.

Stunned onlookers at oceanfront restaurants watched the bizarre scene play out.

"I was just hanging out with some friends at the bar, and all of a sudden I see this car ride down into the water and I saw a bunch of CHP officers chasing it, get [out], go into the water," Angel Juarez told KTTV-TV.

"And then I ran over there with some of my friends, and we looked, and the lady was swimming into the ocean, and it was pretty intense. And then, the Coast Guard came out. The police were here. Everyone was like, packed up on the pier. And that was probably one of the craziest things I've ever seen."

A police boat was able to catch up and arrest the woman. Her name was not released.

Lifeguards rescued the two Boston terriers and turned them over to animal control, according to the Times.
