A former police officer shot his son inside a Florida hospital before turning the gun on himself shortly after posting photos of him online.
The Highlands County Sheriff's Office identified the victims as Joe E. Landon, 67, and his son, Noah Ryan Presley Landon, 23.
The tragedy unfolded Thursday morning inside the AdventHealth Sebring hospital.
Landon had taken his son, who was reportedly non-verbal and autistic, to the hospital because he was being combative.
Authorities say the son was placed in a mental health room in the emergency room.
Landon took a photo of his son strapped to a gurney. He posted it to Facebook with the message: "At er with Noah Ryan prayers." The post included a praying hands emoji, two sorrowful face emojis, and a crying face emoji.
The sheriff's office says that he then pulled a handgun and fired shots into a wall in an apparent attempt to get other people out of the room.
Landon then shot his son and then shot himself.
Both men died on the scene. There were no other injuries.
"Following the incident that occurred in the Emergency Room at AdventHealth Sebring late Thursday morning, we want to reassure everyone that no team members were harmed," Lauren Rozyla, AdventHealth West Florida media communications manager, said in a statement.
