The family of a teenager savagely beaten near a St. Louis-area school in a video that went viral says she remains unconscious.
In a statement through their lawyer, the parents of 16-year-old Kaylee Gain suffered a fractured skull that resulted in brain bleeding and swelling from the brutal beating.
The full scope and extent of Kaylee's injuries and prognosis for recovery still can not be determined until she wakes up.
"The family asks that you continue to keep Kaylee in your thoughts and prayers as she fights to recover," Lawyer Bryan M. Kaemmerer said.
The fight took place more than a week ago near Hazelwood East High School.
A video widely circulated on social media shows the two teens start fighting for an unknown reason.
The two end up on the ground and one of the girls repeatedly punches Kaylee in the face before slamming her head into the road several times.
A 15-year-old has been arrested in connection with the attack and the Missouri Attorney General wants the teen to be charged fully as an adult.
"Although the family would like justice to eventually be served through the legal system, their focus at this time is dedicated exclusively to Kaylee's recovery," Kaemmerer said.
Two GoFundMe pages set up to help the family have raised nearly $400,000 to pay for medical care for Kaylee.
"The family also asks all members of the community at large to come together to denounce teen violence and bullying as there have been far too many recent examples of teen violence that have resulted in significant injuries and even deaths in some instances," Kaemmerer said.
