Honk If You're Banned: Cambodian PM Puts the Brakes on Musical Car Horns

Hun Sen ordered for musical horns to be banned on all Cambodian roads.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered a ban on musical horns across the country following videos posted on social media showing people dancing on roads and roadsides while passing trucks blasted rhythmic tunes as their signal horns.

The Associated Press reported that Hun—who took over the Cambodian government after his father, Hun Sen, resigned last year—called on his country's Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and police across the country to immediately take action against any vehicle whose normal horn has been replaced by a tune-playing one by ripping it out and restoring the standard honking type.

Hun said provincial authorities have already implemented the measure, but he wanted to announce it publicly to ensure its enforcement nationwide.

In a comment on his Facebook page on Monday (Mar. 18), recent social media posts showed "inappropriate activity committed by some people, especially youth and children, dancing on the roadside to the musical sounds from trucks' horns."

Hun added that such dancing affected public order and posed a traffic hazard, which is a medical hazard.
