Utah Funeral Home Brawl Leaves Victims Stabbed, Shot: Police

Salt Lake City PD received multiple calls shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday about a fight and stabbing

Six people were hurt in a "chaotic" brawl outside a Utah funeral home, police said.

The Salt Lake City Police Department said it received multiple calls shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday about a fight and stabbing at a funeral home at 372 East 100 South.

Officers found people injured, one of them critically. Paramedics took all four to a hospital. Their injuries ranged from minor to life-threatening.

Police say one of the victims might have been shot. Witnesses reported a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

Officers stopped the vehicle and two people in the car were transported to the hospital and later released. Their injuries were unknown.

The third person in the car was detained for questioning.

A police spokesman described it as a "very chaotic scene."

"There was some sort of fight that broke out," Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson Brent Weisberg said at a press conference.

Police said the violence was not random, and there was no further danger to the community but no arrests have been made.

"I want to recognize the response from our police officers," said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. "Several of our officers provided immediate, life-saving measures to the victims."

"This type of incident is extraordinarily rare for our city," he went on to say. "I know our detectives are working quickly to determine the motive for this incident, but I am relieved to know that based on the preliminary investigation this was not a random attack."

Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department's Violent Crime and Robbery Squad and Gang Unit are investigating.

Police are asking anyone with information to submit an anonymous tip.
