Over 100 Migrants Breach Border's Razor Wire, Overpower Guards in El Paso Crossing

Over 100 migrants near El Paso, Texas, break through the barbed wire that the Texas National Guard put up.

On Thursday, a large group of illegal immigrants broke through razor wire and charged at the border wall in El Paso, Texas. It was a wild scene, and guards were knocked over.

The incident happened at the same time that the state's law against illegal immigration is being held up in the courts.

Migrants Knocks Texas' Razor Wire

Around 600 people were trying to cross the border, but Texas National Guard troops were trying to push them back in small groups.

As groups separated out, things got tense. A video shows the refugees calling for help and running to the border gate. A group of men wearing hoodies, gloves, and winter jackets pulls the fence apart. Five guards stand in a defensive line to fill the space.

A law enforcement source in Texas told Fox News that the group was made up of more than 300 illegal immigrants. The source also said that about 100 adult males rushed the soldiers, and one has been caught so far for assaulting a soldier.

There was a fight when one family was let through. The source said that more people may be arrested for assault and property damage.

In a video, some migrants put their hands up to show that they are giving up. But just seconds later, others rush through and push the guards out of the way.

A few people in the group run to the border gate and yell at the National Guardsmen who are there. The Texas National Guard then moves quickly to protect the area.

SB4 Law

Because of Texas law SB4, many of these people seeking asylum did not turn themselves in right away, even though this is a well-known place to do so. Instead, they decided to wait because they were stuck in limbo.

The controversial rule in Texas lets local police arrest people who are in the country illegally. Until now, this authority had only been given to federal agents like the Customs Enforcement and US Border Patrol and Immigration.

Federal courts blocked the law several times in the past few days. On Tuesday, it was allowed to go into action for a few hours before it was blocked again that night.

Because the law was so confusing, many travelers didn't know what would happen to them if they turned themselves into Border Patrol. The last two days, as the camp grew, things got more tense.

This week, the Supreme Court briefly let Texas' law against illegal immigration go into force. This law lets police arrest people who are in the country illegally, even though the Biden administration was challenging it in court.

The law was sent back to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which stopped it again hours later while the appeals process continued. The Biden administration has said that the law takes away from the federal government's role in enforcing immigration laws.

As part of Operation Lone Star, which is led by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, Texas has sent National Guard troops to the border with Mexico, according to Opera News.
