Ret. Israeli General Sounds Alarm on IDF Base's Defenses After Drone From Iraq Strikes 'Vital Target'

The attack was allegedly launched by an Iran-backed militia group

A drone believed to have been launched from Iraq damaged a navy base in Eilat on Monday, the Israeli Defense Forces reported, and a former Israeli general is sounding alarm over what he says is a serious hole in their defenses.

The "suspicious aerial target" crossed from the east and fell in the area of the Gulf of Eilat, the military confirmed.

A security camera captured the small blast at around 1:33 a.m. on Monday.

There were no injuries reported and the only damage was to one building, the IDF said in a post on X.

The Islamic Resistance of Iraq, and Iran-backed group, took responsibility, the Times of Israel reported.

But a retired Israeli general says the attack shows that the Iron Dome defenses are not set up to defend against an attack from the east in that area.

"There will need to be better defense in that area providing we have enough of those defense systems to spread around," retired Brig. Gen. Israel "Relik" Shafir told i24 News.

Along with a naval base, there is also an air base in the area of Eilat. An international airport is also to the north of the drone strike.
