Adidas halts German Soccer Jersey Sales Over Likeness to Nazi Symbol

The number 44 was likened to the SS symbol

Adidas and the German Football Federation (DFB) have reportedly stopped selling German national team jerseys with the number 44.

It comes after some people say the design of the numbers is reminiscent of the Nazi SS symbol.

The Schutzstaffel (SS), was a major paramilitary organization during the Nazi reign in Europe under Adolf Hitler.

"We will block the personalization of the jerseys in our online store," Adidas spokesman Oliver Brüggen told German news outlet dpa on Monday.

By Monday afternoon, it wasn't possible to personalize the jerseys with a name and number anymore in the Adidas online shop, the news outlet reported.

The DFB has reportedly stopped delivering previously ordered jerseys with the number from its online shop.

No Germany player has worn a number 44 jersey, according to the organization.

A new design for the number four is reportedly underway.
