Grisly New Details Revealed in Case of Florida Dad Charged in Murders of Wife, Toddler Son

The couple's 2-year-old son was found face down in the pool

Police revealed new grisly details after a Florida dad found unconscious allegedly murdered his wife and their toddler son before trying to kill himself.

Jean Carlos Aponte, 40, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Sara Ashley Gama, 38, and their 2-year-old boy, Ethan, at their Plantation, Florida, home, court records indicate.

It's unclear if he entered a plea to the charges or retained an attorney to comment on his behalf.

Aponte is accused of fatally stabbing Gama 28 times in the face, neck, and stomach, WTVJ-TV reported, citing the arrest affidavit. She was found to have multiple fractures and sustained several defense wounds to her hands, said authorities.

The couple's son, Ethan, was allegedly stabbed four times in the neck, authorities said. He also sustained defense wounds to his hands. Police found him face down in the family's pool. He died as a result of the stabbings and subsequent drowning, according to the medical examiner, the outlet reported.

Police were first called out to the family's home last Tuesday after Gama's dad discovered his daughter in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor and his son-in-law unconscious in the master bedroom. He was unable to locate his older grandson.

First responders later found Ethan dead in the pool.

"He was a beautiful little boy, and I never heard anything," family friend, Gilda Howell, said, according to WSVN-TV. "... I'm just so devastated."

The couple's newborn son was unharmed.

Aponte, who appeared to be suffering from an apparent drug overdose, was administered Narcan and transported to the hospital, where he remained until his first court appearance over the weekend, the outlet reported.

On Sunday, a judge denied him bond and ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation.

A motive in the gruesome slayings remains under investigation, but Aponte previously reached out to a local support group for veterans struggling with mental health issues.
