Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that will limit the power citizen oversight boards have to examine police misconduct, according to a report.
The legislation will allow local chiefs of police to create their own "civilian oversight" boards whose members are appointed by the chief or sheriff, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
The boards will be authorized to review policies and procedures, the report said. They will not be able to oversee use-of-force complaints or internal affairs investigations.
DeSantis, a Republican, said the legislation "puts the kibosh on these extrajudicial investigations against law enforcement."
He claimed the boards were "stacked with activists."
"You have review boards, that's fine, but it's got to be done in ways where you have the Sheriff or Chief of Police appointing people," the governor said. "It can't be people that have an agenda."
