NASCAR's David Ragan surprised many and won the Sprint Cup race at Talladega on Sunday after a massive 16-car wreck.
Sunday marked Ragan's second career victory, according to the Associated Press. He beat out Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson, who were both at the head of the pack during the two-lap overtime sprint, to finish first.
"This is a true David versus Goliath moment here," Ragan said after the race.
Rain delays stretched the race into a seven-hour ordeal.
The slippery conditions and the setting sun contributed to a 16-car wreck at the Talladega Superspeedway, according to the Los Angeles Times. With only six laps remaining, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. hit J.J. Yeley, who then smacked into Kurt Busch. Busch's car went airborne and flipped, ultimately landing on the hood of Ryan Newman's car and leading to a 16-car pileup.
Danica Patrick was one of the cars affected by the wreck. She finished a dismal 33rd.
"It happens out here; it is frustrating," Patrick said. "Ricky (Stenhouse Jr.) was trying to make it four-wide, and the No. 36 came up to block him, and it turned him. Then the No. 78 (Kurt Busch) was spinning; I went high, and somebody came up and clipped me and put me in the wall. I'm not sure which car it was."
Newman voiced his displeasure after the race.
"They can build safer race cars, they can build safer walls. But they can't get their heads out their (expletive) far enough to keep them on the race track, and that's pretty disappointing," Newman said. "I wanted to make sure I get that point across. Ya'll can figure out who 'they' is."
Sunday was the sixth time in the last seven races at Talladega that a multi-car crash happened in the final 8 laps.
