When gunfire broke out in a sixth-floor South Carolina hotel room, a panicked man tried escaping to safety by climbing down the outside of the building.

He ended up falling to his death.

Myrtle Beach Police Department says it happened about 1:30 a.m. Sunday at Hotel Blue on S. Ocean Blvd.

Officers say there was a disturbance that led to several shots being fired inside the room.

As the participants of the disturbance were attempting to flee the room, one of the men went onto the balcony and was seen attempting to climb down the rear of the building.

He plunged to the ground before reaching the fifth floor.

The man, later identified as 27-year-old Jorge Orellana of Hendersonville, N.C., was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

He died of his injuries shortly after 6 a.m., according to the Horry County Coroner's Office.

The police department says everyone who was in the hotel room at the time of the shooting has been identified, and the firearm was recovered.

No one was injured by the initial gunfire, according to authorities.

They did not indicate that anyone was arrested in the case but said the incident is still under investigation.
