Authorities arrested a 12-year-old Iowa boy accused of fatally shooting his 13-year-old female friend over the weekend.
Police responding to a report of a shooting at an Eldora, Iowa, home Sunday evening discovered the yoiung classmate of the alleged shooter dead and took the male juvenile suspect into custody, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
The identities of the victim and alleged shooter have not been released due to their ages.
A motive remains under investigation.
South Hardin Schools Superintendent Dr. Adam Zellmer confirmed the victim was a student in the district.
"Sadly, I'm writing to let you know that I have received information this evening regarding the death of one of our cherished South Hardin Middle School students. All of us at South Hardin Community Schools are shaken by this news and still gathering details as law enforcement completes its investigation," Zellmer said in a statement.
"Please keep the families involved, our students and our staff in your thoughts and prayers in the days ahead," he added.
