Dramatic video captured the moment a female college student wrestled away a gun from a masked robber on campus in broad daylight.
Madelyn, a 21-year-old senior economics major at the University of Chicago, managed to disarm her attacker as she walked from class Wednesday afternoon, WMAQ-TV, WBBM-TV and WGN-TV reported, citing university police.
Madelyn was one of three students in a matter of minutes who was held at gunpoint by a gunman disguised in a mask.
"He asked me to give him my phone. ... That's when he flashed the gun," she recalled to WMAQ.
Surveillance footage showed the dramatic struggle that ensued between the pair as Madelyn fought to hold on to her phone. At least one bystander witnessed the scuffle, but never intervened, according to the video.
"In the tussle, I was able to take the magazine out of his gun, and I tossed it into a bush. But at the moment, I didn't know what I was grabbing," Madelyn explained to the station of her split-second decision-making.
The gunman subsequently made off with Madelyn's phone, which was later recovered by police, as was the gun magazine.
"I did not register the situation," she said. "It all happened so quickly. Definitely just give the phone away. I don't think the altercation was the best solution."
No arrests have been made.
Meantime, the university said it's increased security around campus.
