A birthday party for children turned into a gruesome crime scene when a suspected drunk driver crashed into a boat club in Michigan where the party was taking place.

An 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother died at the scene of the crash at the Swan Creek Boat Club. A total of 15 people were injured. Ambulances and medical helicopters took nine victims to the hospital with serious injuries.

A 66-year-old woman was arrested at the scene on drunk driving charges, authorities said. They did not identify her but said she would face additional charges.

"The scene was described by the first responders as extremely chaotic, with high level of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident," an agitated Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said at a news conference.

The incident occurred in Berlin Township, about 30 miles south of Detroit.

The woman may have been at a nearby tavern before the incident, the Associated Press reported. Authorities closed the bar and planned to execute a search warrant there.
