An 18-year-old woman was fatally shot early Sunday on the campus of Delaware State University, prompting its closure and the cancellation of all scheduled events.
Officers responding to a report of shots fired found the woman near a freshman dormitory with a bullet wound to her upper body around 1:40 a.m., the Associated Press said, citing local police in Dover, Delaware.
The unidentified victim was treated at the scene and rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police said she lived in Wilmington, about 50 miles away, and wasn't a registered student.
Her name was being withheld pending notification of her family.
No one else is known to have been hurt and no arrests have been made.
A statement from the university said the campus has been closed to outsiders, all events were canceled and police patrols were increased.
The school also said that counseling services would be available and that it would "continue to take all necessary actions to ensure the health and well-being of our campus community."
Delaware State University was founded in 1891 and is among America's historically black colleges and universities. About 47% of its 6,200 students live on campus, according to the school's website.
