Students at the University of Washington (UW) postponed a planned pro-Palestinian encampment on the campus Thursday in solidarity with other schools across the country because of a lack of diversity in their ranks.
"After a long meeting we decided to postpone the encampment. We want to make sure this encampment is a better reflection of the UW community, and have even greater unity with Muslim, Palestinian, and Arab students," the UW Progressive Student Union announced in an Instagram post.
"We want to be part of a much larger coalition of groups and make no mistake, WE WILL HAVE A UW ENCAMPMENT! We want to make sure everyone's voice is included and this action is as safe, secure, and strong as possible," the statement said.
The posting concluded with: "Free Palestine."
Even before the encampment was postponed, trouble was brewing about the makeup of the protesters.
A university law student who identified as Yoseph asked if the group had any "conversations with Palestinian orgs or students about this encampment?" 770 KTTH reported. The student union responded, "yup."
Pro-Palestinain encampments have been popping up in schools nationwide to show solidarity with Columbia University after more than 100 protesters were arrested by the New York Police Department last Friday.
