Tornadoes ripped through Nebraska and Iowa, injuring several people and damaging or destroying hundreds of homes on Friday — with more severe weather forecast for the central U.S. on Saturday.
Three people were hurt when a twister struck an industrial building in Lancaster County, Nebraska, causing it to collapse with 70 people inside on Friday, the Associated Press reported.
Several people were trapped in the wreckage but everyone was rescued and no one was critically injured, authorities said.
Some of the worst destruction was reported in suburban Omaha, where a tornado plowed through miles of rural farmland before chewing up houses and other buildings, AP said.
In the small town of Minden, Iowa, about 30 miles northeast of Omaha, as many as 50 homes were completely destroyed and two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Chief Deputy Jeff Theulen of the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office told reporters late Friday.
Dramatic video shot in Lincoln, Nebraska, showed debris getting sucked up into the vortex of a massive twister as it barreled near a freight train that was sticking out of a highway underpass, according to the Weather Channel.
The National Weather Service said Saturday's forecast called for strong tornadoes, very large hail and damaging winds across the southern and central Plains and into the lower to mid Missouri Valley.
