Charlotte Shooter Terry Hughes, 39, who killed a US Marshall and three other officers on Monday, has a lengthy criminal record across multiple counties, according to court documents.
In 2012, Hughes was arrested for evading deputies, ultimately sending them on a 115-mph high-speed chase just to avoid being stopped at a license checkpoint along Highway 62 and East Hughes Mill Road.
The chase came to an abrupt end when Hughes crashed on I-40 and 85. He was convicted in November, later that year, of eluding arrest.
More recent charges include possession of a firearm by a felon and marijuana possession in 2021. A warrant for his arrest was issued in March 2022.
In April 2021, Hughes was arrested in Mecklenburg County for eluding arrest from CMPD officers, in addition to numerous drug charges.
The documents, obtained by 12 Investigates, reveal additional charges against Hughes in Orange and Catham counties, with his earliest offenses taking place in 2001.
Over the last two decades, Hughes has repeatedly failed to appear in court.
When task force police officers attempted to serve a warrant for Hughes on charges out of Lincoln County on Monday, Hughes immediately opened fire on law enforcement officials.
Four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers were shot, one of whom succumbed to his injuries. Additionally, four officers from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were shot, three of whom succumbed to their injuries.
