Toddler's Plea About 'Monsters in the Wall' Turns Out to Be 50,000 Bees

A little girl in North Carolina warned her parents for months about the monsters in her closet - but it took a professional to finally track down the creatures haunting her at night.

"She was saying she heard monsters in her bedroom wall, but we'd been watching Monsters Inc.," mother Ashley Massis Class told People. "She was a little speech delayed, so when she tried explaining it, we thought she meant there were monsters in her closet."

The girl's parents gave her "monster spray" - a spray bottle full of water - and were surprised when the three-year-old continued to struggle with sleeping in her room. After eight months of buzzing walls, her parents finally found the real culprit.

After seeing endangered bees entering her attic, Massis Class contacted a beekeeper to patch a hole in her home and remove the pests. As the beekeeper investigated further he noticed the bees were traveling through the attic floorboards down into the child's bedroom.

Massis Class was astonished when the professional used a thermal camera to show her inside her daughter's walls. "At first, I thought it was a body. I was like, 'What is that?' And he says he thinks it's a hive. He didn't even have his bee gear on yet, but he took a hammer and knocked it into the wall. Bees came swarming out like a horror movie," she told People.

"He opened the wall and it was one of the biggest hives he's seen in his 40-year career," she shares. "Just 50,000 bees were swarming like crazy in my daughter's bedroom. It was a nightmare. They were dropping honey everywhere, all over all her stuff."

Honeybees are an endangered species and cannot be killed by exterminators. Instead, the beekeeper removed tens of thousands of bees from the girl's bedroom walls, luring many of the insects away by taking their queen with him.

"We've had a couple of thousand that died because their queen is no longer here, so that's sad. We've been leaving the window open, hoping the remaining ones fly out, but many will die without being able to smell the queen, as I understand," Massis Class told People.

"So we've been cleaning up thousands of dead bees every single day, and I've learned that bees can still sting you when they're dead. It's like a landmine, with thousands on the floor. We have to wear rubber boots to walk around and not get stung."

While the family will have to deal with thousands of dollars of repairs, that are not covered by homeowner's insurance, their vindicated daughter has found a new ally in her fight against the monsters.

"We told her, 'We found the monsters, you were right.' Then we introduced her to the beekeeper and she was like, 'No, he's a monster hunter,'" Massis Class said. "So she called him Mr. Monster Hunter for the rest of the day, which was awesome."
