A 9-year-old Australian girl who got an on-stage hug from Taylor Swift in February as she battled an aggressive form of brain cancer has passed away.
Swift often hands out a signed hat to one fan when she performs her song "22" in concert, so the family of Scarlett Oliver, 9, tried to get Swift's attention on social media so that she would meet the young girl during her upcoming New Era tour stop.
Swift responded by kneeling and hugging the young girl as she performed the song.
She then placed the hat on the stunned girl's head.
An Instagram video of the encounter has been viewed more than 30 million times and more than 2.5 million likes.
"@taylorswift you are AMAZING!! Thank you so much for making Scarlett's dream come true!!" Scarlett's stepmother wrote after the concert.
The brave young girl had battled an incurable aggressive form of cancer known as "High Grade Glioma."
She underwent radiation therapy alongside chemotherapy to help with symptoms but there is no known cure for grade 4 glioma.
Her family posted an update on Monday that Scarlett had passed away days before her 10th birthday.
"My Angel, so strong, so brave, so beautiful," her father wrote with a heart emoji. "Nothing will ever be the same again."
A GoFundMe for her family has raised more than $100,000.
