A fifth member of "God's Misfits" told the families of the Kansas moms he allegedly helped murder that he was "sorry for their loss" during his initial court appearance this week.
Paul Grice, 31, has been charged with two counts each of first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection with the deaths of Veronica Butler, 27, and Jillian Kelley, 39, of Hugoton, Kansas, according to authorities.
Outside a Texas County, Oklahoma, courthouse Wednesday, Grice apologized to the victims' families.
"Sorry for their loss," he said while being escorted inside, according to NewsNation. Of his own family, he said, "I miss them. I love them."
During police questioning, Grice allegedly admitted he took part in the slayings and subsequent burials of Butler and Kelley, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said.
The accusations against the suspect come weeks after "God's Misfits" members Tifany Adams, 54; her boyfriend Tad Cullum, 43; Cora Twombly, 44; and her husband Cole Twombly, 50, were also hit with the same charges.
On March 30, the victims were driving to pick up Butler's children from Adams – their paternal grandmother – in Eva, Oklahoma, when they disappeared.
Later that day, the women's abandoned vehicle – with evidence of foul play – was discovered on the side of a bloodied highway, according to authorities.
Butler and Kelley's bodies were found April 14 buried in a hay-covered hole on a property rented out by Cullum, two weeks after they vanished.
Authorities allege a child custody battle between Butler and her ex motivated the suspects to kill.
Grice was denied bond. He requested a public defender and is due back in court May 15.
