The House passed an antisemitism bill amid widespread pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses across the nation.

The bill was supported by a majority of the House and passed with a vote of 320 to 91. According to ABC News, seventy Democrats and 21 Republicans voted against the bill, citing its infringement on free speech.

New York Republican Congressman Matt Lawler, who introduced the bill, said, "It's critical that we crack down on antisemitic hate within our own country," CNN reported.

"I'm thankful for the bipartisan support of the Antisemitism Awareness Act and for the support from a wide range of Jewish organizations that are standing up, endorsing this legislation, and saying enough is enough."

Nevertheless, New York Democratic Congressman Jerry Nadler argued the bill "sweeps too broadly."

"Speech that is critical of Israel alone does not constitute unlawful discrimination," he said, according to the network.

The Antisemitism Awareness Act would force the Department of Education to adopt the definition of antisemitism set forth by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance "for the enforcement of Federal antidiscrimination laws concerning education programs or activities, and for other purposes," the bill's text read.

Antisemitism is defined as "a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities," according to the IHRA's website.
