The body of a Pennsylvania boy found stuffed in a duffle bag in March has been identified as missing 4-year-old Damari Carter.
An autopsy confirmed the severely decomposed remains concealed in the duffle and found in a Philadelphia alleyway by sanitation workers belonged to the little boy, said authorities.
Damari's body was dumped less than a half-mile from where he lived with his mother, 30-year-old Dominique Bailey, and her boyfriend, 30-year-old Kevin Spencer.
"I'm just glad that his remains were found," Nakia Bailey told The Philadelphia Inquirer Wednesday. "Because that was sitting not so well with any of the family, us not knowing where he was. We're still trying to wrap our heads around this situation happening at all."
Family members first reported Damari missing in late December after Bailey told them he was fatally struck by a car.
Bailey and Spencer have been in custody since January, when police said Bailey "provided information on her involvement in the death" of Damari during questioning.
She allegedly admitted to detectives she witnessed Spencer beat her child to the point of unconsciousness a month earlier, according to USA TODAY. When the couple realized Damari was dead, Bailey said they stuffed his body in a trash bag and got rid of him. However, at the time, investigators were unable to locate the child's remains.
Since then, Bailey and Spencer have been held on charges of murder, conspiracy, endangering the welfare of children, criminal use of communication facility, abuse of corpse, false report and tampering with evidence, according to WCAU-TV.
The pair are scheduled to appear in court June 18.
