American Surfer Shot to Death During Mexican Surfing Trip Was About to Get Married

The bodies of Jack Carter Rhoad, 33, of San Diego; and brothers Callum, 33; and Jake Robinson, 30, of Perth, Australia; were discovered dumped at the bottom of a 50-foot well in Baja California

The American surfer shot to death alongside his two Australian friends during a surfing trip near Ensenada, Mexico, was just months away from saying, "I do."

The bodies of Jack Carter Rhoad, 33, of San Diego; and brothers Callum, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, of Perth, Australia; were discovered dumped at the bottom of a 50-foot well in Baja California Saturday. The trio suffered fatal gunshot wounds to the head during a carjacking, according to authorities, CNN reported.

Rhoad, the founder of Loma Apparel and director of workforce solutions at a San Diego IT company, was engaged to be married to Natalie Weirtz, 32, on Aug. 17, at a ceremony in Columbus, Ohio, according to the couple's wedding planning website.

He popped the question to Natalie in July 2023, according to his Facebook.

Over the weekend, Natalie's friend launched a GoFundMe to "rally support for Natalie during this unimaginably difficult time and provide essentials such as housing, food, transportation, and more," the fundraiser description read.

"In the wake of the heartbreaking loss of Carter Rhoad, Callum Robinson, and Jake Robinson, our hearts ache with grief for their families, friends, and community. Their presence brought immeasurable joy, love, and kindness to those around them, leaving a mark on our lives."

The men were reported missing April 29 after failing to check-in to their Airbnb. Their burned-out white pickup truck was dumped 40 miles away from where their bodies were subsequently found, a local police source told CNN.

Three Mexican citizens have since been arrested in connection with the case.
