A U.S. soldier accused of stealing from a woman was arrested in Russia last week, according to reports.
Staff Sgt. Gordon D. Black was taken into custody Thursday in Vladivostock, CBS News reported, citing Pentagon officials.
Black had been stationed in South Korea and was in the process of relocating back to the U.S. when he traveled to Russia, willingly, according to the network. He was not there on official business.
During a Monday press briefing, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters that the U.S. was "aware of this case and other matters related to Russia," but was unable to "say much about it," CBS reported.
The U.S. Army confirmed the soldier's arrest.
"The Russian Federation notified the U.S. Department of State of the criminal detention in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations," spokesperson Cynthia Smith said, according to CNN. "The Army notified his family and the U.S. Department of State is providing appropriate consular support to the Soldier in Russia. Given the sensitivity of this matter, we are unable to provide additional details at this time."
The army did not immediately respond to Headlines & Global News' request for comment.
