The actress and stuntwoman who played the first victim of the great white shark in the movie "Jaws" has died.

Susan Backlinie played Chrissie Watkins in the 1975 Steven Spielberg classic, a character who was attacked at the start of the movie while skinny dipping in the ocean.

Her death, aftter the shark attacked and dragged her under water, is said to be the most famous and well-known scene in the "Jaws" franchise.

Watkins' remains later washed ashore and were discovered later in the movie by a deputy.

Backlinie's scene in "Jaws" took three days to film. She was secured by wires and reportedly did not know when she was going to be pulled under the water to elicit a more authentic reaction.

The "Jaws" movies frightened a generation of beachgoers and kept many people out of oceans.

Backlinie died early Saturday morning at her home in Ventura, Cal., according to the Daily Jaws. She was 77.

"It is with heartfelt regret to confirm our beloved Susan passed away this morning. We would like to thank everyone for their condolences at this time. Please respect the family's privacy during this difficult time," said her agent Matthew Templeton.
