President Joe Biden has announced to Congress that the White House intends to send more than $1 billion in new arms shipments to Israel.
The new package will still need to be approved by lawmakers but would include $700 million in tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles, and $60 million in mortar rounds, according to The Associated Press.
The new package comes a week after pausing a shipment of bombs to Israel over concerns they would be used against civilians in densely populated areas and White House opposition to a full-scale invasion by the Israeli military in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
Last month, Congress approved a bill providing $95 billion in aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.
Per a report by the US State Department, some American-made weapons provided to Israel may have been used in breach of international law.
However, the report stopped short of conclusively stating that the Israeli Defense Forces had violated international law.
Adding that the guarantees received from Israel about heeding the legal use of US weapons were "credible and reliable," as reported by the BBC.
Biden previously stated following the pause in arms supply that "civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs."
News of the latest package comes on the heels of the presidential primary election in Maryland, where activists have encouraged voters to register a protest ballot against Biden due to the president's favoritism towards Israel over the Gaza War.
Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers in Congress have launched legislation that would prohibit any further pauses in weapon shipments to the US ally.
The law would require the State Department and Defense Department to secure the "prompt delivery" of military equipment.
The White House has promised to veto the bill should it manage to pass the Senate.
Weapons transfers to Israel have become a political liability for Biden ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
