A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is reportedly missing after experiencing what government officials described as a "hard landing" crash on Sunday.
The incident occurred in a remote area in the mountains near the border on Azerbaijan about 375 miles northwest of Tehran, the Associated Press reported.
The exact location of the President's helicopter is still unknown," an IRIB News correspondent reported from the area where it is believed that the incident has occured.
Iranian state media reported that Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, the governor of Iran's East Azerbaijan province, and other officials were traveling with Raisi.
Emergency crews have not been able to reach the scene due to foggy conditions, the IRNA reported.
Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi told the outlet that it may take time for the search-and-rescue team to reach the site.
He said he hoped that the team would arrive soon and provide more information on Raisi's condition.
Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei prayed for the president during a meeting with families of the staff and commanders of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.
State TV later aired images of the faithful praying at Imam Reza Shrine in the city of Mashhad, one of Shiite Islam's holiest sites, as well as in Qom and other locations across the country.
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the Iran crash, but administration has little more than what has been provided by Iranian media.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
