Police Officer Shot in Washington, D.C., 2 Persons of Interest Detained

It's unclear what led to the shooting

Two persons of interest were arrested Monday in connection with the shooting of a Washington, D.C., police officer.

The officer, identified only as a male captain with 18 years of experience, suffered from non-life-threatening injuries while driving to work in his personal vehicle in the area of 7th and Oglethorpe NW, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

"It could have been anybody," Chief Pamela Smith told reporters Monday.

Prior to the shooting, Smith said two men in a vehicle were driving erratically, "stopped the car very abruptly, got out of the car and fired on the officer."

It's unclear if the shooting was targeted or if the persons of interest knew the victim was a police officer.

The victim drove himself to the 4th District Station for help. He is recovering at a local hospital with his family by his side, said Smith.

The victim was able to provide a partial license plate to investigators, and the persons of interest were subsequently taken into custody in Prince George's County, Maryland, after their vehicle overturned in a crash, Smith said.
