A Detroit police officer was arraigned Friday, for raping a woman who called 911 after reportedly being sexually assaulted by her boyfriend,
Deon Nunlee was one of the police officers who responded to the call of the 31-year-old woman October last year. But upon arriving at her home, he took her to the bedroom and assaulted her.
He was arraigned on second-degree criminal sexual conduct, assault and misconduct charges, according to the Wayne County prosecutor's office.
The prosecutors said that the 39-year-old police officer and his partner responded to a domestic violence complaint at a house on Detroit's northwest side around 3 a.m. The woman told the authorities that Nunlee took her to thebedroom while the other officer remained downstairs with her boyfriend. She said that the officer sexually assaulted her and told her that he would return later that morning.
Police Chief James Craig told reporters Friday afternoon that the DNA results were linked to Nunlee, reports the Associated Press.
"This is the type of misconduct that should never happen," Craig said. "This does not reflect the work the Detroit Police Department does each and every day."
"I would go out and say that I think the majority of the public has a great deal of confidence and faith in this police department," Craig continued. "And people should never lose sight that when we hire police officers we hire from the community, and you all know that there's people in our community that commit crimes. They make bad choices, make bad decisions, and police officers are no different."
Commander Johnny Thomas of the department's professional standards bureau said Nunlee joined the police department in 2008. He was placed on administrative duties after the woman accused him of the assault. On Feb. 10, he was suspended without pay. He said Nunlee previously was involved in minor misdemeanours, reports the Herald Times Reporter.
