Ukraine Suffers Deadliest Attack in Weeks After Russian Strike On Kharkiv Megastore Kills 12-Year-Old Girl

The number of dead in a bomb attack on a large store in Ukraine has grown to 18 as some of the victims are being identified.

The aerial attack on Saturday targeted a construction supplies store in the city of Kharkiv. 48 people were injured and several remained missing, CNN reported.

The city's mayor said that about 120 people were in the store at the time.

Among them was Irina Myronenko and her 12-year-old daughter Maria. They were both killed, Ukrainian Catholic University said in a Facebook post.

Myronenko's husband was also injured in the attack and remained hospitalized.

"Please wrap the families of the fallen in prayer during this difficult time," the school said in its announcement.

"The attack targeted the shopping center, where there were many people - this is clearly terrorism," Mayor Ihor Terekhov said, according to the Voice of America.

It is the deadliest attack on Ukraine in several weeks.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko described the scene as "hellish" in the hours after the attack.

Kharkiv is Ukraine's second-largest city and is near its border with Russia.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims that Russia is preparing to intensify its military push along Ukraine's northern border,the Associated Press reported.

On Tuesday, Belgium promised Ukraine $1 billion in military aid. It came a day after a similar pledge from Spain.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is warning that if any Western military weapons are used to hit inside Russia that the war could escalate.

"Representatives of countries that are NATO members, particularly in Europe, should be aware of what they are playing with," Putin said, according to the Associated Press.

Putin also said that "countries with small territory and dense populations" should be particularly careful.
