On Monday afternoon, a cell phone video shot from inside a Seattle-bound Airbus A320 plane showed smoke streaming from the wing of United Flight 2091 just before takeoff from O'Hare Airport.
United said the plane headed out to the runway, only to be stopped before takeoff due to an engine issue.
Airport operations temporarily ceased immediately, leaving incoming planes circling overhead, according to WLS-TV.
"I felt the impact on my window. As I looked, the engine was on fire and smoke was coming out," said Ivan Paloalto, the passenger who took the video while on board United Flight 2091.
Carmen Hernandez, another passenger, told ABC, "We were in the air, and they said, 'I'm sorry for the delay. You're going to be late a little bit, because in Chicago, there's an emergency."
The smoking plane was towed back to the gate, and passengers were deplaned.
