A historic Cleveland Orthodox church made famous in the movie The Deer Hunter suffered significant damage when the roof caught fire.
The fire broke out at the 128-year-old St. Theodosius Cathedral around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Fire crews quickly began to fight the fire to save the temple.
Priest Jan Cizmar, Cathedral Dean, along with other clergy and neighbors began to remove and preserve holy items from the Cathedral, the Diocese of the Midwest said in a statement.
In a post on the Cathedral's Facebook page, the pastor expressed gratitude to firefighters who extinguished the flames.
"I also offer my gratitude to the Cleveland police, Tremont West, our neighbors, friends and of course to you, our dear parishioners of our beloved Cathedral," the Rev. Cizmar wrote.
Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Midwest arrived in the evening to inspect the damage to the Cathedral. He planned a service on the Cathedral grounds on Wednesday.
The Deer Hunter Wedding Scene
The Cathedral was used for several scenes in the 1978 blockbuster movie 'The Deer Hunter.'
The film centers on the psychological and social effects of the Vietnam War on blue-collar Americans, according to Slash Film.
The three soldiers featured in the film are played by Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and John Savage.
The cathedral was the backdrop of the film's wedding of Steven (Savage) and Angela (Rutanya Alda) in the steel town of Clairton, Pennsylvania.
51 Minute Wedding Scene
The wedding scene lasted 51 minutes and caused controversy due to its length. The studio wanted it dramatically cut down but director Michael Cimino fought to keep it as he intended.
Cimino won his fight and the film is now considered a masterpiece.
