Actor Robert De Niro slammed Donald Trump — again — just hours after the former president's conviction on all 34 felony counts in his hush-money trial, declaring: "Justice has been served."
This is "just one part of the whole picture, so I want to be very careful," De Niro said during a red-carpet appearance Thursday night in Manhattan for his new movie "Ezra."
"I have to say something. This is my country. This guy wants to destroy it. Period. He's crazy," he added, noting that Trump should "absolutely" go to prison for his crimes.
But De Niro's not relaxing just yet.
"I'm always very weary. I don't wanna get too excited about anything," he told the New York Post's Page Six. "It's as it should be. Justice has been served. That's it."
When asked if he ever fears for his safety for speaking out against Trump, De Niro admitted he does. "You think about that. It makes me more angry," he said, Variety reported.
De Niro went after Trump in a widely-publicized statement Tuesday outside the downtown New York City courthouse where Trump was being tried. The actor angrily warned that Trump was a "danger" to the nation.
After De Niro's remarks the National Association of Broadcasters canceled its planned Leadership Foundation's Service to America award to the actor in a presentation that been set for next Tuesday in Washington, D.C., the group confirmed to The Hill.
"This event is proudly bipartisan," said a spokesperson. "While we strongly support the right of every American to exercise free speech ... it is clear that Mr. De Niro's recent high-profile activities will create a distraction from the philanthropic work that we were hoping to recognize."
