Good Earth Lighting Inc. is recalling more than 1.2 million Rechargeable Integrated Lights over fire and burn hazards after one death and multiple fires were reported, the U.S. consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday.
The Good Earth Rechargeable Integrated Lights are being recalled because the lithium-ion battery can overheat and ignite the plastic housing.
According to the CPSC, one consumer died and another was treated for smoke inhalation when the recalled lights overheated and caused a fire at their home last year. Good Earth Lighting, based in Mount Prospect, Ill., said it is aware of another nine reports of the lights overheating, including six cases that resulted in fires and property damage.
The recall includes 1.2 million rechargeable lights sold in the U.S. and another 37,800 sold in Canada, bearing model numbers starting with RE1122, RE1145, RE1362 and RE1250. The model number can be found on a white sticker on the back of the light. the lights came in white, silver, almond, black and rose gold with a charging cable; and with or without a remote control and/or power adapter.
The recalled lights were sold stores nationwide including Lowe's, Ace Hardware, Meijer, and Menards, and online at Goodearthlighting.com, Amazon.com, Lowes.com and QVC from October 2017 through January 2024 for about $20 for a single unit and about $35 for a bundle.
The lithium-ion battery-powered lights are intended for use in areas that lack permanently wired fixtures or where there are barriers to installing wired lights, such as closets, cupboards and staircases.
Consumers should immediately stop using the lights and contact Good Earth Lighting to receive a free replacement light of at least equal value, including shipping. To receive the replacement, consumers will be asked to write the date and initial next to the model number on the light, write "Recalled" on the front of the light, and upload photos to goodearthlighting.com/productrecall.
