People in four different states across the country have become severely ill after eating Diamond Shruumz Microdosing Chocolate Bars, the Food and Drug Administration warned.
The illnesses were reported in Arizona, Indiana, Nevada and Pennsylvania.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and America's Poison Centers are investigating after eight reports of illness in four states were associated with the Diamond Shruumz Microdosing Chocolate Bars, which, according to the company's website, contain a "proprietary blend of nootropic and functional mushrooms."
Eight individuals reported seeking medical care for a variety of symptoms after eating the spiked chocolate bars, including seizures, central nervous system depression (loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness), agitation, abnormal heart rates, hyper/hypotension, nausea, and vomiting. Six of the eight were hospitalized, according to the FDA. No deaths have been reported.
The FDA said consumers should not eat, sell or serve any flavor of Diamond Shruumz-brand Microdosing Chocolate Bars, and should discard them.
"This product may appeal to children and teenagers as it is marketed as a candy," the FDA said. "Parents and caregivers should consider discussing the information in this advisory with their children and take extra care to avoid this product being consumed by younger people."
The Diamond Shruumz Microdosing Chocolate Bars are sold in retail locations nationwide, including smoke/vape shops, and at retailers that sell hemp-derived products such as cannabidiol (CBD) or delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8 THC).
The FDA said it is still working to determine the cause of the illnesses, and is considering next steps.
