A California man is calling for gun reform after two of his cousins were shot and killed outside their Los Angeles home - in what appears to be a completely random attack.
Family members say that Sergio Rios, 33, and Ricardo Rios, 19, were about to leave and get food for their family, on June 1, when both were shot at multiple times in their parked car. Sergio was married and the father of toddler twins, while Ricardo was "just beginning to carve out his path in life," according to a GoFundMe post.
"How many innocent men and women need to die before change happens in our gun laws," the pair's cousin Ivan Robles said during a Monday press conference.
"How many Rickys and Sergios need to leave us too soon? How many mothers need to live with broken hearts? How many children need to live and never see their parents again before we all decide enough is enough?"
The Los Angeles District Attorney announced Monday that Marcos Navarro, 33, was charged with two counts of murder in connection to the shootings. Investigators believe there is no connection between the brothers and Navarro, KABC reported.
"This person took away our future," Sergio's widow, Mabel, said during the Monday press conference. "We have two twins who are 2 years old, and we he had plans for them, to raise them."
Navarro is currently being held in lieu of $5 million bail. His arraignment is scheduled for July 3. If convicted he could face a life sentence.
"We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the brothers' loved ones who lost two members of their family to senseless gun violence," District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. "These tragic deaths underscore the urgency of keeping guns out of the hands of the wrong individuals. Our office is dedicated to seeking justice for the victims and their loved ones."
