A passenger on his way to San Francisco from Fiji died in the middle of the flight.

Fiji Airways says the 41-year-old U.S. citizen suffered a medical condition approximately 90 minutes prior to the scheduled arrival at San Francisco International Airport.

It happened on flight FJ870 from Nadi International Airport.

The airline said the cabin crew and a doctor on board provided immediate assistance to the man but he "unfortunately passed away."

The flight crew declared a medical emergency and the plane was given priority for landing in San Francisco. Fiji Airways ground operations were prepared to meet the aircraft upon arrival.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time," the airline said in a statement.

"We commend our cabin crew and the assisting doctor for their swift and professional response to this emergency."
