A Louisiana man arrested in the slaying of a mother and her 3-year-old daughter confessed to killing the young girl as he was being escorted to jail, saying "I did it," according to reports.

Daniel Callihan, 36, was arrested Thursday in Jackson, Miss., in what investigators believe may be a brutal human trafficking case after the body of Callie Brunett, 35, was discovered in her rural Louisiana home, WWL reported.

A suspected accomplice, possibly Callihan's girlfriend, was also arrested, police said.

Brunett's two daughters - Erin, 3, and Jalie, 6 - who had been abducted from the home and were the subjects of a statewide search, were later located in Mississippi. Erin was dead, and Jalie was alive but injured.

Callihan was asked by reporters as he was being escorted to jail in Jackson on Friday why he killed the little girl.

"Sober. No drugs in my system. I did it," Callihan told reporters as he was being escorted to jail in Mississippi, WWL reported.

"I have no reason for what I did. All I want to say is that I was sober," he said, adding that he had been diagnosed with borderline multiple personality disorder and had been taking medication.

He said that he is cooperating with the investigation and would not contest the charges, which means he could face the death penalty.

"I would kill me. For what I did? Lethal injection is the easiest thing for me," Callihan said. "I am not pretending to be crazy. I am certified. I have only been out of the nut house for two weeks."

His alleged accomplice, Victoria Cox, 32, was arrested on Friday at a motel in Jackson, the station reported.

"Based on information that I got yesterday and early this morning, she is an acquaintance and possibly girlfriend of Mr. Callihan," Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said.

The wooded area where the sisters were found contained signs of human trafficking.

"We see cages, small animal cages," Wade told FOX 8. "This is very, very disturbing to me as a police chief and as a father to witness and see what I saw."

Callihan was arrested in the wooded area near where Erin's body was found unburied, Wade said.

Jalie was transported to a local hospital.

Wade said law enforcement officials in Jackson have contacted human trafficking divisions with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Hinds County to assist.

Callihan and Cox both face capital murder, kidnapping and sexual battery charges.
