Police in Germany shot and wounded a man who allegedly threatened cops with a pickaxe and a firebomb during a parade on Sunday.

The unidentified man was hit in the leg during the incident in Hamburg and was expected to recover after treatment, Reuters reported.

"He apparently tried to set fire to this Molotov cocktail and then approached several people including police officers, and the police officers then had to make use of their firearms," said Hamburg police spokesperson Sandra Levgruen.

Cellphone video posted on social media showed the man, dressed in black and with a partially shaved head, carrying what appeared to be a small pickaxe and a bottle with a rag stuffed in it.

He screamed at officers who had their guns drawn, then ran off when another cop sprayed him in the face with pepper spray.

A group of officers chased him and four shots rang out, after which the man crumpled to the street.

The shooting took place during a parade of Dutch soccer fans ahead of a Euro 2024 match between the Netherlands and Poland at a Hamburg stadium.

There was no indication the man had any connection to the tournament and the motive for his actions was unclear, the police spokesperson said.

"We assume that this is an isolated case, that is, disconnected from football," Levgruen said. "I don't see any threat at all or any impact on the game today."

The match went forward as scheduled, Reuters reported.
