Police in California are warning residents that criminals are now using hidden cameras pointed toward their homes as a tactic for residential burglaries.

Wednesday night, Alhambra Police responded to a call on the 1900 block of S. Primerose Avenue following reports of an attempted burglary.

A neighbor of the targeted home had found a hidden camera in the bushes pointing toward their home, and an alarm company also notified the residents of an attempt to open the kitchen window earlier that day.

Criminals are strategically placing camouflage cameras in discrete areas, such as bushes, to collect information on the homeowners' daily routines to rob their homes.

Authorities are advising homeowners to regularly inspect the exterior of their home for any unfamiliar objects or changes in the landscaping that could possibly conceal a surveillance camera.

They also recommend staying vigilant by keeping an eye out for suspicious-looking people knocking on doors.

Never leave a house key hidden somewhere on the premises or a name or ID tag attached to the keys because, if lost or stolen, robbers can easily locate your home, warned the police department.

Other prevention tips include writing down license plate numbers and reporting them should you spot a suspicious vehicle, as well as keeping good lighting around the exterior of the home, as it's the best deterrent to ward off criminals.

Lastly, there should be regular maintenance and upkeep.

Police suggest keeping trees and bushes well-trimmed to eliminate any potential hiding spots.
