An elderly Missouri couple was attacked after they were attacked at a Nebraska rest stop. The man was killed and his was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office says Gary Weaver, 72, and Mary Weaver, 71, were stabbed during an attempted robbery on June 19 at a stop on I-80.

A police affidavit says the incident was captured by the dashcam of a semi trailer at the rest stop.

The video shows the suspect going inside the RV and making a stabbing motion. Later the suspect was shown outside the RV stabbing Mary Weaver in the side of her head, according to KSNB-TV.

Police have arrested James Thompson Jr., 22, on murder and attempted murder charges.

They say he fled the crime scene and was pursued by the Nebraska State Patrol at speeds reaching 120 mph.

Thompson eventually drove into the Platte River, according to the Associated Press. State troopers used a K-9 to find him after a 30-minute search.

The couple's daughter, Victoria Eudy, said her father was an "incredible father and grandpa."

A court appointed attorney will represent Thompson. He is due back in court next month on an arraignment.

Mary Weaver's condition has been upgraded to stable.
