Escaped Pet Donkey Spotted 'Living His Best Life' With Elk

They're "two completely different creatures, but they learn to get along and be each other's family," said Diesel the Donkey's former human mom

An escaped pet donkey has been spotted by his former owners "living his best life" making like an elk and hanging out with an elk herd.

Donkey "Diesel" spooked and headed for the hills back in 2019 during a hiking trip with former owner Dave Drewry near Clear Lake, California.

After months of a fruitless search, "we finally kind of gave up," Drewry's wife, Terrie Drewry, told CBS News. "Just no signs of him."

Then earlier this month hiker Max Fennell filmed an elk herd with a "happy and healthy" donkey in an area without wild burros, and posted the clip on social media.

"It was amazing. It was like, oh my gosh. Finally, we saw him. Finally, we know he's good," said Terrie Drewry. "He's living his best life. He's happy. He's healthy, and it was just a relief."

They're "two completely different creatures, but they learn to get along and be each other's family," she added.

The family doesn't plan on attempting to recapture Diesel, and have since adopted new donkeys.
