Three people were killed and two were injured in a shooting near the University of Cincinnati early Monday, police officials reported.

Police patrolling nearby rushed to the scene when they heard multiple gunshots in the town of Corryville at 2:50 a.m. They found one male dead at the site. Two others injured died a short time later at a local hospital.

Two more injured victims remained in the hospital for treatment Monday afternoon, officials said.

None of the victims' names were released.

The University of Cincinnati quickly sent out an alert on X warning students that police were responding in the area. A following alert warned that a shooting had occurred near the campus.

"If safe, stay at your location. Be observant/take action as needed," the alert urged. It issued an all-clear by 4 a.m.

Cincinnati Police Capt. Mark Burns told the Cincinnati Enquirer that an officer spotted a man carrying a gun into a home after the shootings.

"They don't know if he was the shooter or if he was hiding a weapon; we have no idea," Burns said. He later surrendered and was taken into custody, Burns said.

Police are seeking a motive for the shootings and were continuing to collect evidence on the scene.
