A newly-married couple's joyous celebration turned into a nightmare when masked men showed up and started shooting.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police were called to the wedding reception just before 1 a.m. on June 29, following reports the groom was shot during an attempted robbery.
Manuel and Dulce Gonzalez were celebrating their decade-long relationship as a newly married couple at an intimate wedding party when the robbers showed up.
Witnesses told police they were in the backyard when the gunmen started yelling for no one to move.
They demanded money from the party guests. One of them began sifting through people's pockets before the second suspect shot the groom in the head several times
Both ran off without taking any items or money.
Manuel Gonzalez, 42, was rushed to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
"They took nothing, yet they took everything from us," said Yaribeth Pena, the bride's sister told KTVI-TV.
"He's a good father. A good husband to my sister. He's a hard worker," added Pena. "He's just an all-around good person who, I don't know, didn't deserve this."
The family is pleading with the community to submit any footage they may have of the gunmen roaming the streets.
A GoFundMe has been set up for the couple as they face mounting medical expenses.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are encouraging anyone with information to contact authorities.
